Letters of Recommendation If you have previously taken a course with me, worked with me in the GLOBIS Human Rights Lab, or worked with me at the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI), I am happy to write you a letter of recommendation. To write you the most effective letter possible, here are a few guidelines I have in place to best serve this process:
Contact me to set up a time to meet, so we can discuss what it is you'd like a recommendation for, what your future goals/plans are, etc. Ideally, this would be at least 4 weeks before the recommendation is due. I will not write recommendations without a minimum 4 week notice.
Make sure to have the following items ready to go when we meet/soon after we meet:
Note in your email which course(s) you had with me, if you were in the Human Rights Lab and/or if you worked with me at HRMI.
Information on the internship, graduate program, position, etc. to which you are applying
Unofficial transcripts* - This is particularly relevant if you'd like for me to include some discussion of your academic performance within the letter of recommendation. I can only access grades that I assigned you within courses I have taught, so having this will give me a clearer picture of your overall academic performance.
Current resume/CV
Any drafts (e.g., statement of purpose, personal statement, etc.) that you are including within the application. This will help me get additional insight into why you want to apply, your contributions, your goals within the position, how the position contributes to your overall career goals, etc.
Follow up with me to make sure letters were submitted properly.
Let me know how it goes! I'd love to hear if you got the position/internship/spot in a graduate program!
